Clockwork Ballerina
Aluminum, Bronze, Brass, Copper, Stainless Steel
17” x 15” x 13”
The figure in this piece is slight, composed of simple geometric forms, tracing a spare, epicyclic pirouette around a compact circular stage. The musical accompaniment is provided by three slender chimes.
The clockwork that articulates this ballet, however, is massive in scale, blocky, suitable perhaps for some diesel-era machine collective.
My intention here is to imagine the unspeakable forces at work in the anatomy of a dancer. I attempt to convey with outsized machine elements a sense of the outlandish physical strength that enables the sublime movements in the slight form of an accomplished ballerina.
