Music Player #1
Restored Tube Amplifiers, Salvaged 45-rpm Record Changer and Schoolroom Speakers, Typewriter Stand
40” x 40” x 42”
This is the first in an occasional series of hi-fi assemblages I have built over recent years. I select debilitated tube audio amplifiers for restoration and assemble them with other vintage hi-fi gear and hardware into fully functioning music appliances that play vinyl records.
Emphasizing the sculptural qualities of various outmoded electronic and mechanical components, these constructions reveal a kind of machine-beauty formerly concealed within cabinets, in attics, and under scrapheaps.
The so-called obsolescence of vinyl records notwithstanding, as a kinetic artist I delight in this mechano-musical media, and I find utterly irresistible the tactile/ritual experience of listening to it.
